Search engines scan the internet for the words or topics we are looking for.

Some of the popular search engines are.

Yahoo
It is basically a search directory. It is hierarchically organized with subject catalogue or directory of the web which is brows able and searchable.
AltaVista
This has been created by the research facility of digital electronic corporation(DEC) of USA.
This search engine has a spider called scooter that traverse the web and usenet newsgroups.
Indexing is based on the full text of a document. AltaVista search supports full Boolean, phrase, and case sensitive searches. It supports simple and advanced search modes in simple search, AltaVista will find pages that include your search words. In advance search, the page uses the same syntax rules with Boolean operators like &(AND), |(OR), and !( NOT)
HOTBOT
This engine retrieves and indexes web documents using a robot called Slurp. Hotbot offers simple keyword as well as Boolean searches. This search engine is most suitable for searching specific words or phrases.
Web Crawler
It has a web robot called a webbot that creates a daily index of keywords from documents all over the web. The robot starts with a known set of HTML documents and uses the URL in them to retrieve new documents.
Excite
It uses a spider and indexes for the full text search of documents. It offers services like searches that are case sensitive and the use of Boolean operators(&, |, !).
Info seek
It uses a robot that retrieves HTML and PDF documents. It indexes full text and generates a short summary of each document. This offers indexed site searches and divides the web into a number of convenient baskets.
Lycos
This computer programme features a golem that uses heuristics to navigate the online and build a searchable index lycos indexes titles, headings and subheadings of hypertext markup language,FTP, and Gopher documents.
Google
Google is the best matching web sites in a search, it offers a feature to automatically look for the best possible match and load it.
